Our old intern, Emma, brought a company to our attention this week. Her brother is Chief Engineer at Devon-based game design company, Hit the Sticks. They’re currently in development for their second game. They didn’t start as a game design company, though.
When the company was founded back in 2005, they were running online game tournaments, using other developer’s games. When in-game cheats began to frustrate them, they decided to switch gears, starting with Just Tactics, a turn-based tactical wargame much like an amped up tabletop wargame. You can sign up for a free account to test drive the game for as long as you want, then there is the option of purchasing the full version which unlocks the Deployment Editor, allowing for countless customization possibilities.
Although they are still adding more and better features to their first game, they’re also moving forward with a second game, Mark of the Old Ones, a unique platformer based on the surreal and disturbing H.P. Lovecraft mythos. By working within this world, the game attracts the cult following that comes with anything that involves Cthulhu and the Elder Gods.
What makes this game stand out from other platformers is the system of motion. The playable character uses two tentacle-like appendages to move, hanging and swinging from the ceiling, pushing off surfaces and relying on momentum to get through the world. This creates special challenges and a one-of-a-kind experience that draws the player into the eerie environment created around it.
The company is launching a Kickstarter next week to raise the money needed to continue developing this game. More information about the Kickstarter can be found on the official Hit the Sticks Twitter feed. To get a better idea of gameplay, you can download a core mechanics demo from the game’s webpage, which can be played with a two-joystick game controller (Xbox 360, Playstation 3, or Wii Classic Controller) on Linux, Windows or OSX. The final version of the game will come out first for the computer, then Playstation 4.
