500 Worst Passwords

I have seen a number of these myself.  I found this list (below) published at http://www.boingboing.net/2009/01/02/top-500-worst-passwo.html and thought it would be worth presenting to our own clients as it’s pretty important to select unique passwords that only you would know.  Please pardon the profane examples; however, understand that these are all words actually used as passwords by real people.

Some other things to consider when selecting a good password that only you would know:

• Make your password as long as possible.
• While avoiding common words or some of the below listed items, try to make it something you know how to type quickly so that no one can see what you’re typing.
• When you are creating a password, if you have the ability to use special characters such as .*&-~ use them.  This will make cracking your password all the more difficult.
• Use a combination of numbers and both lower case and upper case letters.
• DO NOT use personal information in your password.  This includes:
  Birth Dates
  Names
  Zip Codes
  Addresses
  Anniversaries
  License Plate Numbers
  Social Security Numbers
  Account Numbers
• DO NOT use things that are easy to notice being typed.  For example, in the below list there are many passwords in sequence on a keyboard.  Ex. 1234, qwerty
