This is part 3 of a 5 part series on Order and Payment Processing in Magento.
To create a shipment for an order, click the “Ship” button. Like invoicing, you can create partial shipments and you can create as many shipments as there are total items in the order.
In the create shipment screen, you can enter tracking numbers for the package(s) in the “Shipping Information” box. A handful of common carriers are available to select, or you can enter in your own custom values. If you select one of the available carriers Magento will automatically generate a link to that carrier’s tracking page.
While you can technically create shipments for items that have not been invoiced, it is not advisable to do so, since this deviates from the expected order workflow and may cause problems with other order functionality, like credit memos.
Note that shipment notifications are not automatically emailed to the customer. In order to send a notification you’ll have to check the “Email Copy of Shipment” checkbox right above the “Submit Shipment” button. It is advisable to do this so that the customer can track their package.
One thing to keep in mind is that creating a shipment in Magento is not the same thing as creating a shipping label for the package with your carrier. Magento will not do this for you, unless you install a separate extension with this functionality. You will still need to use your shipping carrier’s website and/or software to create shipping labels.
